How to Choose the Right Globe Valve for Pipelines?

According to the flow direction of the medium, globe valves can be divided into straight-flow type, straight-through type, and angle type, each with distinct differences. The straight-through type has inlet and outlet aligned in the same direction at 180°, while the straight-flow type features a stem and passageway at a certain angle, allowing the medium to flow without changing direction. This design offers the lowest flow resistance among globe valves. The angle type has inlet and outlet at a 90° angle, causing the medium to change flow direction and generating some pressure drop. In general, straight-through globe valves are widely used due to their easy installation on linear pipelines and convenient operation, though they have relatively higher resistance. For pipelines with strict requirements on flow resistance, straight-flow type valves are preferred. Angle type globe valves are typically installed on vertically intersecting pipelines and are suitable for high-pressure conditions.

In 2016, during a chemical plant fire, a critical valve was located in a hard-to-reach area surrounded by intense flames. It took three dangerous attempts before Liu Xinhui successfully shut it off—a moment he still vividly remembers. Valves are crucial for controlling material flow during emergencies. If not closed in time, they can cause continuous leaks, spreading fires, and even explosions.#Manual valve operation is time-consuming and risky, especially in high-temperature, toxic, and low-visibility environments. Inspired by a chainsaw repair, the R&D team designed a portable electric valve actuator. Combining chain, gear, and power tool features, the device offers: Fully enclosed design with corrosion-resistant, high-strength materials Precision gears for smooth power transmission Compact and stable structure Lightweight design with enhanced adaptability Overload protection and auto shut-off in case of valve jamming Despite limited resources and outdated equipment, the team overcame challenges and successfully built the tool using repurposed materials. The actuator is suitable for globe valves up to DN400 and can open a valve in just one minute—four times faster than manual operation. Proven effective in the field, the tool is easy to carry, fast, accurate, and reduces rescue workers' exposure to danger. Looking ahead, Jilin Petrochemical plans to expand its use to larger valves, adopt advanced materials and lithium battery technology, and integrate explosion-proof designs to ensure safe operation in hazardous environments.
